The general focus is improving writing at the sentence level by noticing, mapping, imitating authors through the use of grammar.
Workshop content builds capacity in grammar knowledge, models how to teach the content, and makes use of drafting and revision techniques-- i.e., chunking, main idea vs. details, elaboration, removing details-- at the sentence level. Modules include
1) Sentence Kernels
2) Building Sentences with Detail
3) Explode the Moment"

1) Sentence Kernels -- First, we will answer the question What is a sentence? Then we will examine three kinds sentence kernels, identifying their essential elements. We will use a mapping process and graphic symbols to map model sentences.
2) Building Sentences with Details -- We will begin with a sentence kernel and by asking and answering specific questions, add details. The added details will grow the length of the sentence by word count, but those details will narrow the image of the reader. During this process, sentence elements, word order, and the use of internal sentence punctuation will be discussed. Alice Nine calls this zooming in.
3) Explode a Moment -- You will learn how to think in slow motion to compose a well-crafted sentence that puts your readers in a place, engages one of their senses, and creates a tone through dialogue or a thought-shot. Discussion will include connecting elements, kinds of clauses, kinds of sentences, and internal sentence punctuation.
